This interactive exhibition features hundreds of objects\, photographs\, artworks and films from the Yarrila Arts and Museum collection. A key highlight of Yaamanga (around here) is the short film\, Daalga Nginundi Wajaarr (Sing Your Country)\, which is informed by Yuludarla’s (Gumbaynggirr Creator) journey from north to south exploring miirlarl (sacred places)\, culture and history through song and cinema. The piece is a celebration of language and its revival and is an invitation for all people to learn the story of this place. It explores untold histories of Country; its triumphs and its sorrow and the dialogue Gumbaynggirr people have every day with her.Daalga Nginundi Wajaarr (Sing Your Country) was created by Alison Page and Nik Lachajczak of ZAKPAGE. Driven by the boundless potential of abstract space\, Fredericks has returned 31 times over the past two decades\, exploring perceptual states of being through photographs. His chapters\, or ‘cycles’ as he calls them\, have explored interventions with mirrors\, and more recently fire\, capturing infinity and the void through the lens of contemplative minimalism. Defined by light\, colour and space\, Fredericks’s photographs are a phenomenological response to the experience of existing in an ostensibly empty place without scale for extended periods of time.  \n\n\n\nFredericks’s journeys across the salt plains of Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre have encompassed four distinct chapters: Salt\, Vanity\, Array and his most recent Blaze. Each chapter speaks of the power and potential of landscape\, frequently utilising elements of weather\, reflection\, perspective\, light and darkness to speak of the sensations that nature can produce in all of us.  \n\n\n\nKati Thanda–Lake Eyre is an inland salt lake in South Australia’s desert region\, where water travels thousands of kilometres through interconnected river systems before evaporating and leaving behind an immense salt landscape.  \n\n\n\nSalt\, Fredericks’s first cycle\, began in 2003. For the first few years and with access from farmers\, Fredericks would camp on the edge of the lake. On those initial visits he brought the bare necessities. He would cycle out onto the lake to a point where there were no geographical features\, set up camp and live for weeks at a time in what felt like a void.  \n\n\n\nIn 2017 Fredericks exhibited the second ‘cycle’ entitled Vanity. The series introduced mirrors\, bringing a flat and reflective geometric shape into the landscape. Mirrors have a long and deep history in art and literature\, often used as symbols of spiritual depth. Placed at the centre of the frame\, the visual illusion of the mirror creates a feeling of infinity and directs the viewer’s gaze back out into the landscape.  \n\n\n\nArray\, the third ‘cycle’\, was exhibited in 2019. Five mirrors were positioned\, shifting the perspective and depth of the landscape. For Fredericks\, taking these images often involved waiting for long periods until the temporal elements became just right.  \n\n\n\nBlaze\, the fourth and most recent ‘cycle’\, has fire as its central theme\, as it burns and emerges from shallow silken water. Permeated with a sense of magical realism\, animals and females often appear together to represent aspects of psyche and identity\, alluding to the complexity of female identity and the sentience of animals. Central to her work are the porous boundaries between human and animal states\, and the affinity of females and animals.  \n\n\n\nIn ‘Snakes and Mirrors‘\, Hicks contemplates the self-awareness of animals and our desire to understand the phenomenology of animal life from a human perspective. Underpinning this series is an exploration of animal consciousness and self-awareness: how do animals experience the universe? \n\n\n\nHicks was moved by Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke’s ‘Eighth Elegy\,’ which portrays the mystical relationship between humans and animals and contemplates how humans and animals experience time and phenomena differently. Being unaware of death\, the animal looks not backward to the past as man does\, but forward into an undivided totality. \n\n\n\nHumans perceive time as a linear continuum of past\, present\, and future; however\, for animals\, Rilke suggests they exist in a unified\, harmonious totality completely different from our worldview. An animal is not conscious of the finite nature of existence with death as the end date. The animal sees the world as a unity: the animal is part of the world\, not separated from it as subject and object.  \n\n\n\nWithin ‘Snakes and Mirrors‘\, Hicks challenges the traditional human-centred vision of the world to emphasise the interconnectedness of humans and animals. Serpents\, birds\, monkeys\, and humans bind together\, blurring the boundaries between the two in intimate vignettes that propose time in stasis.  \n\n\n\nPetrina Hicks | Snakes and Mirrors is a Museum of Australian Photography (MAPh) touring exhibition. Their photography and performance art traverses the classifications of costume\, film and recording.The Huxleys were the recipients of the 2023 Wai Tang Commissioning Award and they responded with a new body of work that has all the hallmarks of the humour\, wit and outrageousness we know and love them for.Bad sports reflects upon the ostracisation you can feel when growing up in a country that values sporting achievement above all else. It can be a real struggle\, especially for a creative\, shy queer kid searching for kindred spirits. A love of music\, art\, fashion and the dark underworld is perceived to offer eventual artistic salvation.Bad sports seeks to capture the alienation\, humour and abstraction that the Huxleys experienced growing up in this sunburnt country\, from the larrikins looking for a fair go\, a guernsey and a winning streak. For the uncoordinated and uncooperative queer prisoner\, the struggle is real.Thrust into the ferocious floodlights of the playing field\, Bad sports becomes a performative way for queer people at odds with sports to feel like they can ‘play’ figuratively\, creatively and physically. To allow the ridiculous feats of fashions on the field to harmonise with The Huxleys’ gloriously ‘bent’ vision of the world. The Dadaist notion in full athletic prowess; a giant sequinned ball lunges for the ball in play.
