The City is marking World Maritime Day by lighting up the South Solitary Island Lighthouse Optic (SSILO) on Friday 26 September at the Jetty Foreshore.
World Maritime Safety Day (officially on Thursday 25 September) is dedicated to honouring the entire global maritime industry, with the theme for this year being ‘Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity’. Lighthouses hold a special place in maritime history, warning mariners of dangers and helping guide vessels safely in and out of harbours.
Originally installed in 1880, South Solitary Island Lighthouse Optic (SSILO) guided ships safely through the night as they travelled the east coast. Following the automation of the lighthouse in 1975, the optic was bought ashore, and it was installed at the Jetty Foreshores in March 2024 for all to enjoy.
The SSILO will be switched on from 6.00 – 6.30pm for the community to enjoy.
