STEAM Explorers: Art in Motion is a hands‑on after‑school learning program for ages 10-15 that brings science, technology, engineering, art and maths together through playful experimentation and creative invention.

Across the program, participants will design, build and test imaginative projects using everyday materials and thoughtfully repurposed objects – discovering how movement, light, energy and design can transform ideas into working creations.

Young makers will experiment, invent and problem‑solve as they explore:

  • Drawing machines powered by motors, water and wind
  • Glow and phosphorescence experiments layered with art and design
  • Creative artmaking with repurposed and found materials
  • Kinetic and aerodynamics challenges including paper helicopters, plane gliders, or wind‑powered creations.
  • UV‑reactive ‘light drawing’ experiments
  • Moving artwork inventions inspired by patterns and processes found in nature

The program encourages curiosity, creative thinking and collaboration, while giving participants the freedom to test ideas, take risks and bring their own inventions to life.
With guidance from YAM educators, STEAM Explorers supports skills and concepts commonly explored in Science & Technology / Design & Technology / Visual Arts and Mathematics, including inquiry and experimentation, the design process (plan – make – test – refine), forces and motion, properties of materials, pattern and systems thinking, measurement and simple data recording, and communicating ideas through visual forms. Participants will practice creative thinking, problem‑solving, while building confidence through making, testing, adapting and sharing their ideas in a supportive studio environment.
